Tiger Woods Announces the Passing of His Mother, Kultida: 'She Was My Greatest Supporter'

The legendary golfer once referred to his mother as "the enforcer," and she is credited with inspiring his signature tradition of wearing "power" red on Sundays.

Tiger Woods Announces the Passing of His Mother, Kultida Woods: ‘She Was My Biggest Fan’

Tiger Woods shared on Tuesday that his mother, Kultida Woods, has passed away at the age of 81.

“It is with heartfelt sadness that I want to share that my dear mother, Kultida Woods, passed away early this morning. My Mom was a force of nature all her own, her spirit was simply undeniable,” the 49-year-old golfer wrote on social media on February 4.

He continued, “She was quick with the needle and a laugh. She was my biggest fan, my greatest supporter—without her, none of my personal achievements would have been possible. She was loved by so many, but especially by her two grandchildren, Sam and Charlie. Thank you all for your support, prayers, and privacy at this difficult time for me and my family. Love you, Mom.”

A Fierce Supporter On and Off the Course

Just last week, Kultida was seen attending Tiger’s TGL match in South Florida, according to NBC Sports.

She and Tiger’s father, Earl Woods, were married for 37 years until Earl’s passing in May 2006. While Earl, a former soldier, played a major role in Tiger’s upbringing, the golfer often credited his mother as the true disciplinarian.

"My dad may have been in the Special Forces, but I was never afraid of him,” Tiger told USA Today in 2017. “My mom's still here, and I'm still deathly afraid of her. She's a very tough, tough old lady—very demanding. … I love her so much, but she was tough."

Despite her strict nature, Kultida was always her son’s most devoted supporter. She was present at Tiger’s induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2022, alongside her grandchildren, Sam Alexis and Charlie Axel. Often seen on the fairway cheering him on, she became known for her signature oversized black glasses and visor.

The Influence Behind Tiger’s Iconic Red

One of Kultida’s lasting influences on Tiger’s career was her belief in the power of red. She encouraged him to wear the color during tournaments, believing it would bring him strength and victory.

Initially, Tiger was skeptical. As a junior golfer, he defied his mother’s advice twice—wearing blue to two tournaments—and lost both. "[I] switched to red, and I went on a hot streak. And, well, I kept it," he later admitted.

In 2009, Tiger reinforced his mother’s wisdom on his website, writing, "You should always listen to your mom."

Kultida’s unwavering support and influence on Tiger’s life and career remain undeniable, and her legacy will live on both in his game and in the hearts of those who loved her.
